3rd International Conference - IPAU 2024
FutureFrames - AI in Architecture and Urban Evolution

Faculty of Architecture, University of Prishtina “Hasan Prishtina”
Prishtina, November 7-8, 2024

The future of architecture and urban evolution, connected with the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI), presents an opportunity for innovation and possibility. As we stand at the dawn of a new era, AI has emerged as a guiding force, reshaping our environment, cities, and architectural landscapes.

As AI is becoming ever-present in how we understand and shape our built environment, it is essential to establish a forum for discussion and scientific findings that help shape our understanding of this novel topic.

IPAU 2024: FutureFrames - AI in Architecture and Urban Evolution intends to collect original, cutting-edge contributions from researchers, academics, practitioners, and students, as it is also essential for architects and planners to understand the capabilities and implications of AI both as a powerful tool, as well as a new way of working and living.

This topic is essential, especially for cities and regions that are not at the forefront of AI development, as the impact of AI in the architectural and urban realms is global. Embracing AI-driven approaches can lead to more sustainable, efficient, and economically viable architectural and urban development. It presents an opportunity to leapfrog to more advanced architectural and urban planning solutions.

FutureFrames opens new possibilities for showcasing ideas and plans for intelligent and responsive built environments. It represents a synergy between human creativity and technological advancement, leveraging AI to create living and working environments that not only meet the needs of today but also have the adaptability and intelligence to thrive in the future. In these terms, FutureFrames seeks to find answers to a few questions, such as:

  • What role does AI play in shaping future-ready and adaptable architectural spaces?
  • How is AI transforming the process and outcomes of architectural design in contemporary practice?
  • What are the key benefits and challenges of combining AI with human creativity in architecture and urban planning?
  • How can AI help cities achieve sustainable and efficient architectural and urban development, especially those less advanced in AI?

TOPICS:

  • Generative Design: software, process, and design alternatives
  • Spatial Analytics: data, patterns, trends, and connections
  • Biotechnology: living facades and green infrastructure
  • AI and the Human: senses, health, and wellbeing
  • AI and Cultural Heritage: data, experience, and engagement
  • Energy efficiency and sustainability: performance, integration, and optimization

The results of the above topics available in “FutureFrames - AI in Architecture and Urban Evolution” lead to the following opinions or arguments: AI generates multiple design options based on criteria set by architects, allowing for creative exploration of possibilities; AI predicts potential issues in the spatial planning phase, enabling architects and urban planners to address spatial problems before they arise; AI algorithms help optimize architectural designs related to preservation based on various parameters like identity, aesthetics, structural integrity, and energy efficiency; AI integrates sensors to monitor building performance, adjusting systems in real-time for occupant comfort/humanity/health and wellbeing or the negative moments that may arise; AI helps create immersive virtual environments for clients to experience designs before construction, aiding in better decision-making; AI assists in designing environmentally friendly buildings by analysing data on energy consumption and proposing solutions for sustainability, including biotech architecture.
